In Response To: CHRONIC DIARRHEA (JACQUES FORAND)

The first thing you must do is keep her hydrated. Dehydration is a major, debilitating risk with diaheria. She is also losing a lot of nutrients during these purges.
Red Raspberry leaf tea is a great tasting and effective solution. It contains lots of vitamins & minerals, and is very soothing to the stomache, mucous membranes and the nerves, besides it tastes great so she will be happy to drink a lot of it.
Yarrow is excellent as a tea to help relieve chronic diahrea. It is generally easy to find locally, and can be given daily. It is very soothing as well, and does not tast to bad.
Because of the cause of her chronic diarrhea, she will probably have to continue taking something for it, it will be almost impossible to stop it completely because of the damage. I wish I could provide a more permanant solution, but with the resection as the general cause, the usual stuff won't work.
Below is an excerpt from Dr. Christopher's writings in it are some formulas he suggests. You should be able to find most of the ingredients locally as I unfortunaly do not carry the single herbs, which will be most effective.

Herbal Aids
1. Rice Water: Rice water will check the diarrhea as will peach leaves, raspberry leaves, and sunflower leaves. [SNH p.9]

2. Peach Leaf Tea or Ripe Peaches: The use of peach leaf tea or ripe peaches themselves will often stop common diarrhea. Sunflower leaf tea is one of the most potent but must be used in very small amounts. [SNH p.17]

3. Plantain: Use a strong tea (steep one ounce of the granulated herb for twenty to thirty minutes in one pint water), inject one tablespoonful three of four times daily (or more frequently in bad cases), and especially after each bowel movement. [SNH p.53]

4. See formula for diarrhea using plantain, silver week and knotgrass. [SNH p.54]
Diarrhea:
3 parts Plantain (Plantago major; P. lanceolata)
4 parts Silver weed (Potentilla anserina)
2 parts Knotgrass (Polygonum periscaria)
Preparation:
Steep 1 ounce of the mixture for 20 minutes in 1 pint of water, cover; strain and allow to cool until blood-warm
Administration:
Inject 1 tablespoonful or more three or four times daily and after each bowel movement.

5. See formula for diarrhea using bayberry, African ginger and pinus. [SNH p.135]
Fomula:
Diarrhea, dysentery, piles, hemorrhoids, colitis (cathartic injection):
1 part Bayberry root bark, powder (Myrica cerifera)
1 part African ginger (Zingiber officinale) (Do not use the Jamaica ginger here)
1 part Pinus or hemlock spruce inner bark, powder (Tsuga canadensis; Pinus canadensis).
Preparation:
Pour 3 pints of boiling-hot water over 1 level tablespoonful of the compound; steep 10-15 minutes; add sufficient cold water to make 2 or 3 quarts; let settle and pour carefully into the syringe.
Administration:
Have the patient lie on the right side so that the liquid may readily fill the colon; where the patient has a weak rectum and cannot hold the water, have him take the inclined position with the head lower than the hips; females with a retroverted condition of the uterus may take the knee-chest position, which will help throw the uterus right over and allow the liquid to enter.

6. See formula for diarrhea using white oak, raspberry and cinnamon. [SNH p.162]
Formulas:
Diarrhea:
1 ounce Bistort root, crushed (Polygonum bistorta)
1 ounce Raspberry leaves (Rubus idaeus; R. strigosus)
1 tsp Composition powder.
Preparation:
Simmer the bistort root for 20 minutes in 1 1/2 pints of water, (covered tightly); pour the hot liquid over the raspberry leaves and composition powder and steep another 20 minutes, well-covered; strain off the clear liquid, sweeten with honey to taste; when cool, bottle and keep in a cool place.
Dosage:
3 tablespoonfuls every 1/2 hour until the purging stops.

7. Acute Diarrhea: Give the syrup of Turkey rhubarb according to the dosage specified. See formula for syrup of Turkey rhubarb using turkey rhubarb, sugar and glycerine. [SNH p.185]
Syrup of Turkey rhubarb:
4 ounces Turkey rhubarb root, cut (Rheum palmatum)
2 quarts Distilled water
3 pounds Yellow D sugar.
4 ounces Glycerine
Preparation:
Simmer the herb gently in the distilled water for 80 minutes; strain, return the liquor to the cleansed vessel and reduce by simmering to 1 pint; add the sugar while stirring and simmer slowly for 5 minutes (skim if necessary as the scum rises to the surface); remove from heat and when clear add the glycerine; allow to cool, bottle, and keep in a cool place.
Dosage:
1 tablespoonful 3-4 times daily. Children: Less, according to age.

8. Mucilage of Comfrey: Diarrhea, dysentery, and cough [delicate children]. Give the mucilage sweetened with honey in teaspoonful doses frequently (it strengthens, nourishes, soothes and heals). See formula doe mucilage using comfrey root, water, honey and glycerine. [SNH p.310]

9. Mullein: for diarrhea, dysentery, and bleeding of the bowels. Boil 1 ounce of mullein in 1 pint of milk for a few minutes, strain and give in 1/2 cupful doses after each bowel evacuation (and if you don't have a scale or the time to calculate the equivalent measure, just grab some and go to work). [SNH p.317]

10. Wild and Domestic Sunflower Leaf: An excellent and easy-to-find herb for diarrhea is the common wild and domestic sunflower leaf. Make up a tea of this, and start giving a teaspoon of the tea at a time. Increase the amount gradually if needed, but not too fast, as it will cause constipation if too much is taken. This is children dosages. [HHH p.64]

11. Oak Bark Tea: A real life saver is a rectal injection of oak bark tea, also drinking this same type of tea. This works in the most severe cases. We must always go back to the cause, after relieving the effect, by checking the diet. [HHH p.64]

12. Serious Diarrhea in Children: Should the diarrhea be a more serious nature, keep the child on nothing but teas for six, twelve or twenty-four hours or more, depending on the age of the child. The following herbs are suitable for this purpose: red raspberry, yarrow, oak bark, bayberry bark, sage (garden), mullein, marshmallow, nettle, slippery elm, strawberry leaves, ginger, plantain. [HHH p.64]

13. Juices for Diarrhea: Carrot, cranberry. [NL 3-5]

14. Vegetables for Diarrhea: Apply cabbage leaves to the abdominal region during the day and a fresh application for overnight and drink a cabbage broth. [NL 4-12]

15. Vegetables for Diarrhea: Sweet potatoe, winter squash [NL 4-12] , and ginger

16. Brown Rice: We have seen serious cases of diarrhea respond most effectively to rice water made by boiling one ounce of rice to one quart of water for 20 minutes, strained and drunk. [NL 5-1]

17. Fruits for Diarrhea: Apricot, blackberry, blueberry and apple. [NL 5-1]

In addition, Papaya has also been helpful in cases of severe diarrhea.

I hope I have been of some help, if I can be of further assistance, or if you would like to receive further information by mail, please feel free to contact me directly.
